Flue Gas Desulfurization Systems Market - Growth, Trends and Forecast, 2013 - 2019

Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) involves the removal of sulfur dioxide from flue gases of fossil fuel power plants such as coal, automobile tires, and oils. Sulfur creates unpleasant human respiratory problems, and also causes acid rain, therefore it needs to be removed from the environment. Modern flue-gas desulfurization systems help the environment by scrubbing the flue gases to create cleaner air emissions.

The increase in demand for electricity due to the economic developments across the globe, especially in the Asia-Pacific region has resulted in more requirement of coal, which is the most important source for thermal power generation, and has led to an increase in the demand for flue-gas desulfurization systems. Strict rules and regulations followed by government bodies in various countries to decrease the content of sulfur from air has also led to an increase in flue gas desulfurization systems.

Asia-Pacific is the leading market for these systems, followed by Europe and North America, with China having the highest growth rate due to the rapid industrialization which has led to significant sulfur emissions. Some of major methods which are used to remove sulfur dioxide from flue gases include wet scrubbing, spray-dry scrubbing, wet sulfuric acid, and the dry injection process. Lime, limestone, and sea water are used as the primary materials in these processes for the desulfurization of flue gases.

The flue gas desulfurization systems market can be divided between old and new plants. The older plants need to retrofit FGD systems and new plants need to include FGD systems due to regulations. The market for retrofit FGD systems is also very large  and many flue-gas desulfurization systems in Europe, United States, and Japan are more than 20 years old and need to be replaced or retrofitted.

There is intense competition in the flue-gas desulfurization market and some of the market players which deal in flue gas desulfurization include Alstom, Babcock and Wilcox Company, Marsulex Environmental Technologies, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Hamon, and Siemens Water Technologies.
